Join us for your PhD
We are looking for a motivated young researcher to carry out a PhD thesis with an FPI predoctoral contract within the project “Mechanisms and therapeutic modulation of prolonged maturation in MECP2 mutant mice” (PID2025-174526NB-I00), funded by the Spanish State Research Agency.
This is a joint project between our lab, NeuroPlaNe, and the NeuroRare lab led by Carmen Agustín-Pavón. The thesis will be co-supervised by Carmen Agustín-Pavón and Vicente Herranz-Pérez, and the selected candidate will work side by side with Carmen, Vicente, Rafa, Daniela and Patri to understand how mutations in Mecp2 shape brain maturation, and to search for therapeutic targets that could improve the quality of life of people with Rett syndrome.
- Position
- Predoctoral researcher in training (FPI), full-time (35 h/week)
- Goal
- PhD thesis within the project; contract tied to project duration
- Where
- Dept. of Cell Biology, Functional Biology and Physical Anthropology, Universitat de València (Burjassot campus)
- Supervisors
- Carmen Agustín-Pavón & Vicente Herranz-Pérez
- Deadline
- 10 working days from the day after publication in the DOGV (October 16, 2026)
- Reference
- DOGV 16/10/2026, Annex VII · CPI-26-573
What you will do
- Maintenance of genetically modified mouse colonies carrying Mecp2 mutations
- Behavioural testing and pharmacological rescue experiments
- Collection and processing of brain tissue for histology
- Immunohistochemistry and immunofluorescence
- Microscopy and image analysis
- snRNA-seq, PCR and Western blot
Requirements
- Bachelor’s degree in Biology, Biochemistry and Biomedical Sciences, Biotechnology, or Pharmacy
- Category C professional accreditation for working with laboratory animals (RD 53/2013, Order ECC/566/2015)
- Admission to a PhD programme at the Universitat de València by the time of hiring
- Not holding a PhD degree
What we value
A Master’s degree in Neuroscience or Biomedicine; English and Valencian; hands-on experience with immunostaining of nervous tissue, bright-field, fluorescence and confocal microscopy, behavioural tests (elevated plus maze, social interaction, tail suspension, novel object recognition, Y-maze, locomotor activity), stereotaxic surgery, PCR, snRNA-seq and Western blot, colony management, statistics, and previous research experience in neuroscience (publications, conference presentations, Master’s or Bachelor’s theses). Experience with Rett syndrome mouse models is a plus.
How to apply
Applications are submitted online through the Universitat de València Human Resources (PTGAS-PI) website, attaching your CV and supporting documents. Please read the official call (Annex VII) for full details. If you have questions about the project, feel free to get in touch with us — we would love to hear from you!
